Spencer brought a strong team to the SEMLA 6’s on a beautiful April Saturday looking to compete for the title.

We were given a tough draw, with games against Premiership champions, Hitchin, runners-up and Flags winners Purley, Hillcroft and the hosts Walcountian Blues.

vs Hillcroft (3-2)
We opened against Hillcroft and dominated the game with good fluid attacking however we failed convert several of our open chances. Nonetheless good defense and solid goalkeeping saw us through with goals from Ant Broadhurst (2) and Will Walker (1).

vs Purley (5-8)
Our second match against Purley opened up awkwardly with Purley grabbing 3 quick goals on some defensive lapses. We battled back levelling the score at 4-4 by half-time but Purley was too strong in the second half and won the game in a wide open contest that could have gone either way. Goals from Ant Broadhurst (1), Dan Hughes (1) and Pete Sayia (3).

vs Blues (2-3)
Next up were hosts, Blues, and we put the defense and offense together in another great matchup that saw us come out of the gates attacking the Blues net from every direction. We netted 2 quick goals and could have been 4-5 up if it weren’t for some great Blues goalkeeping and a few missed opportunities.

We continued to control the game into the second half before a questionable penalty call on a great hit from Dan Hughes. Blues took advantage netting 2 quick goals to tie the game going into the last minute. Spencer continued to attack and deserved more goals but the Blues keeper made several outstanding saves and Blues capitilized with a late winner to take the game. Goals from Colin Rutter (1) and Will Walker (1).

vs Hitchin (2-4)
The final game of the day against Hitchin started off on a sour note with an illegal stick penalty on the opening faceoff. Hitchin took advantage netting two quick goals to take the lead. From there we played them evenly throughout with some good defence and a few great saves from Colin Byrne but in the end we didn’t convert enough chances and lost in another tight match-up with goals from Colin Rutter (1) and Will Walker (1).
