League Week 4: Walcountian Blues 3's 6 - 9 Spencer 3's

Spencer 3’s chalked up their first win of the season with a victory over Blues 3’s in the preliminary round of the flags knockout competition.

Today’s performance was much improved from last weekend at London Uni with much better ball control and an overall better balance across the pitch. The trio of close defenders were well matched up against the experienced Blues attack. The majority of the Blues squad appeared to youth players who could of run the Spencer midfield ragged but the hard yards were put in, plus we had the luxury of being able to play Brendan at long-stick midfield which negated the Blues more confident and attack minded players.

Up front for Spencer, Mark, Cliff and Sam finished some nice team moves. Mark with his trademark accurate shots and Sam with neat finishes from close-in. Cliff did not register but ensured shots were backed up and possession was retained.

A Spencer debut today for Anthony Banerjee who impressed in midfield with some strong direct running, solid defence and safe stick skills.

Spencer had the lead throughout but Blues played their best stuff in the 3rd quarter and a quick goal or two at the start of the 4th could of made this a bit squeaky. Craig Simkin steered the Spencer ship back on course with a long-stick rocket following a brief sortie up-field, then Mark sealed it when he found the top-corner on a fast break assisted by Rob Gooch.

Great to get the win, but room for improvement across the pitch, especially on ground balls which will need to be rock solid when we travel to Hitchin ‘A’ on 6th November.

Quarter Scores: 2-4 / 2-6 / 4-7 / 6-9

Spencer III’s were; Colin Byrne, Toby Rule, Craig Simkin (1 goal), Glen Gardener, Brenden Callan, Rob Gooch, Gareth Jones, Rodney Yong-Set, Anthony Banerjee, Dan Taylor (3), Mark Davies (3), Sam Horowitz (2) and Cliff Hide
