League Week 16

East Grinstead 7 – 4 Spencer

Spencer 3’s 8 – 3 Hitchin ‘A’

A crucial win for the Spencer 3’s against bottom team Hitchin ‘A’, but it was a close game for 3 of the 4 quarters.

Spencer welcomed some new and old faces today. On debut was defender Chris Jones (ex Cambridge Uni & Stopfordians), on return was Matt Blom for his first game of the season, and finally Anthony Banerjee was back for his 2nd game in Spencer 3’s colours. All put in a good shift with Anthony joint top scorer with vice-captain Gavin Park.

With 8 different scorers today it bodes well for the huge games coming up over the next few weeks if the 3’s are to avoid relegation from East Division 2. The league table may show us mid-table but the teams below have winnable games in hand and this season it’s two-up/down so it could be a dogfight right to the end.

Spencer’s first goal was the pick of the bunch. Alan drove into the crease and found Alex Lee alone on the post who popped the ball over the keepers shoulder. However for the rest of the first half Spencer’s shooting was below par. At least a dozen chances were created but only a couple of shots were on target. Much room for improvement there.

The game was won in the 3rd quarter. Spencer dominated the midfield, pressured the Hitchin clear and won the quarter 5-0. The final 20 minutes was less impressive offensively but there was no defensive wobble as Hitchin put everything into trying to claw their way back into the game.

Quarter Scores: 2-1 / 2-2 / 7-2 / 8-3

Spencer III’s were;
Colin Byrne, Toby Rule, Chris Jones, Jamie Muir-Wood, Matt Blom, Gavin Park (2 goals), Rob Gooch (1), Alan Keeley (1), Simon Vaughan, Anthony Banerjee (2), Dan Taylor, Alex Lee (1), Sam Horowitz and Peter Compton (1)
